Packing

Our packing starts tomorrow.  One of our close friends came though with a truck load of Wal-Mart boxes so that we don’t have to spend a dime buying new ones.  He put Rory to work unloading.

Let me tell you, like you don’t already know:  you really find out who your friends are when it comes time for packing and loading the truck.  The list is shorter than you ever thought before.

I stopped helping people move about 8 years ago when right before my move everyone backed out on me. I vowed that day that I would always hire movers and always refuse people’s requests to help them move. It’s worked out nicely. It keeps me from being disappointed in my friends.

That’s an excellent way to die old and alone. Good luck with that.

My friends weren’t concerned that day how I died or who was with me when i died.. Especially as I carried a couch… yes, a couch, down a flight of stairs by myself and loaded it into a moving truck… with tears in my eyes. Moving is like talking politics.. don’t ask your friends about it.. just do it yourself, bite the bullet and hire movers.

You have never in your even semi-adult life moved 1,000 miles. When you move 1,000 miles you have to wait 7-10 days for your things to arrive. You have to incur $200/night hotel expenses while you wait. Waiting for these things when you have children is impossible. I am not hiring movers in this situation. Andy is driving the truck Saturday and Sunday with the Audi on the back, and will be there when we land to pick us up. Having kids means being highly coordinated.

I helped you move, with no other help.

I remember a time when I helped a nice young lady and her mother move into a beautiful home in Rob Roy. It was possibly the most humid day of the year…. I was the only one doing the lifting!

I am hiring men to pack the truck. Don’t lose sleep over it.

I have so many other things to lose sleep over. On a serious note, good luck with the move, i hope it goes smoothly.
